How To Install Roof Vent/Skylight?

Installing a roof vent on a van can provide much-needed ventilation for your vehicle, but it requires careful planning and preparation. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you install a roof vent on your van:

  1. Gather necessary materials: Before starting the installation, gather the necessary materials including a roof vent, silicone (we used sikaflex 522), drill, jig saw, screwdriver, and screws.

  2. Choose the location: Choose the location for the roof vent carefully, ensuring that it is centered and level. Make sure the location you choose is far away from any roof obstacles such as air conditioning units or solar panels.

  3. Mark the Roof: Using the dimensions of the roof light, mark out where it is going to be on the roof, this is where you will be cutting.

  4. Cut a hole in the roof: Using the drill make 4 small holes in each corner depending on the size of the roof vent. Then saw from one hole to another using a jig saw.

  5. Install the Exterior: Apply a generous bead of Sikaflex 522 around the edge of the hole, then place the the top of the vent over the hole, making sure it is centred and level.

  6. Install the interior: Line up the interior part of the roof vent with the exterior and screw the 2 parts together.

  7. Seal the vent: Apply a bead of Sikaflex 522 around the base of the vent to create a weather-tight seal. Make sure to cover all gaps to prevent any leaks.

  8. Test the vent: Once the roof sealant has dried, spray the vent with a hose pipe. Check for any leaks around the base of the vent and make sure the roof sealant is holding up to the weather.

With these steps, you should be able to successfully install a roof vent on your van. However, if you are unsure about any aspect of the installation, it is always best to seek the assistance of a professional to ensure the safety and longevity of your roof vent.
