If you're reading this, chances are you're considering a DIY camper van conversion and I couldn't be more excited for you! There's nothing quite like hitting the open road in a cozy, customised home on wheels.
Before we get started, let's talk about the basics. You'll need a van (how to choose the right van for you), tools (List of what you need), and materials. It's important to choose the right van for your needs and budget (How much does it cost to build a camper van), so take your time and do your research. And don't forget, the key to a successful camper van conversion is planning and preparation.
Honestly, we had no idea what we was doing when we first started, but with some help, we have great camper van that provides us with great adventures. We have learnt from our mistakes which has allowed us to provide the right information to help you with your build.
Step 1: Windows/Roof Vents
I presume you want your van to be a bright, well ventilated home on wheels? Installing a roof vent or window can be just the solution you're looking for! To start, think about the best spot- where would you like to let the fresh air in or bask in natural light?
Once you've got the perfect spot, it's time to pick the right vent or window. With so many options out there, choose the one that fits your needs and suits your style. Whether it's a small roof vent or a big beautiful window, the possibilities are endless!

Step 2 : Insulate Your Van
The second step in converting your van is to insulate it. This will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You can use a variety of materials for insulation, such as foam board, polyester Insulation or spray foam. Just make sure to properly seal all the seams to prevent drafts.
Personally we used foam board due to its ease of use and it’s relatively budget friendly. Just cut it to size and stick it where necessary. We used a combination of tape and glue in order to keep it in place, however the foam board is usually held in place by your choice of wall/floor.

Step 3 : Install Electrical Wiring
Next up is installing electrical wiring. It is important to do this now as you will need to run the wires before you cover them up. So make sure to decide where you want your lights and other electrical products.
Most people need a battery, solar panels, and an inverter to provide power to your van. You'll also need to install lights, outlets, and switches. If you're not comfortable with electrical work, consider hiring a professional.
We tried to keep our electrics fairly straight forward with two LED strip lights and then power to the fridge, heater and gas. We don't have an electric tap or roof vent so we don't need a lot of power!
Step 4 : Floor, Walls And ceiling.
Time to cover up that insulation so you no longer feel like you're in a spaceship! Most people use ply wood for their floor, we also used it for our walls and ceiling however wooden tongue and groove can also be used.
It's a good idea to fasten wooden battens to the inside of the van before screwing your choice of wall/ceiling as this gives you more places to screw into.

Finally, it's time to add the finishing touches to your campervan. Paint the walls, install cabinets, and add décor that reflects your personal style. You may also want to add features like a shower or a toilet, depending on your needs and budget.
And there you have it! A DIY campervan conversion may seem daunting at first, but with some planning and elbow grease, you'll have a unique and cozy home on wheels in no time.
